The 2004 Asian Tsunami

Year 9 - We are really moving along this term!  We've already learned about what causes earthquakes and volcanoes, where we can find each and how we can measure earthquakes.  Now comes the really interesting bit...our case study! 

First up: Earthquakes!!!

We're going to start by examining the 2004 Asian Tsunami - What physical processes caused the tsunami?  What were its immediate impacts?  What were the long term impacts?  How did people cope?  Why did some countries cope better than others?  What can we do in the future to limit the impacts of tsunamis?

Take a look at some of the photos and videos from the Tsunami - How would you describe the impacts of this natural hazard?

Plate Margins

Alright year 9, you've figured out that the pattern to most volcanoes and earthquakes is that they are along plate boundaries. We also call these plate margins. That leads us to our next question, what are the four types of plate margins?

1. Constructive
2. Destructive
3. Conservative
4. Collision

As you can see from the links above, what occurs on those margins really depends on the direction that the plates are moving. Isn't the geosphere interesting? So here's a little fun task for all my geography geeks out there - can you come up with a rhyme, a song, or even a dance to help you remember those plate margins? Let's see who can really impress Mrs. Mitchell next week - I believe a credit or an edible prize might be in your future if you try!

I hope all is well with you and your current exploration of convection currents... ha... get it... Current exploration of Convection Currents!!! I crack me up.

Anyhoo...this topic will certainly help you this week as you explore our dynamic planet in further detail. But I have a specific quandry for all of my Geography Geeks at Beaumont School.

Year 9: Let's Get Ready to Rumble!!!!

Lucky you...you live on an amazing planet, as can be evidenced by this wonderful commercial for the discovery channel :-)

Beyond that wicked representation of all things we on Earth should be curious and amazed by, you live on not just an amazing planet, but an active one. That is why we will be starting this year with our Wonderful World of Geography's Tectonics Unit.

In this unit we will be exploring the following questions:

1. What is the structure of our Earth like?
2. Is there a pattern to where earthquakes and volcanoes occur?
3. What occurs on the four different plate boundaries?
4. How are earthquake's measured?
5. Why was a tsunami created after an earthquake in the Indian Ocean?
6. How can a city prepare itself for an earthquake hazard?
7. How do people respond to a volcanic eruption?

However, our exploration of all this active Earth has to offer will not simply end with those questions; instead, you can view them simply as a starting point to lead us in the right geographical direction.

Since you are reading this, you ought have already begun this exploration with our first question - What is the structure of our Earth like? - Wasn't that a fun lesson!?!

You will already also be working hard on your homework as well I'm sure...as we have the hardest working students in St Albans. So just a reminder for those who were far too engrossed in today's lesson to hear the homework - You are to finish your diagram of the process of convection currents. If you follow the link provided in the last sentence you will find a reminder of that process to help your homework along.

A relaunch

Beaumont Mini-geoggers has suffered this year, mostly as a result of a lack of time on the part of Mrs. Mitchell to keep it going. However, everyone can look forward to a new and improved mini-geoggers site relaunching this September.
